Welcome to part one of my adventure into the world of Saga of Ryzom (which is, incidentally, named "Atys" and not Ryzom", a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game released this year. Today we're going to cover character creation and a few early quests, and get ourselves situated in the world.

After creating your account (with a month free for regular users, and a 14 day free trial if you take the trial on the website) you can log in. Pretty normal stuff, so far, although it's worth noting that for now the window isn't full-screen.

Next, you pick a server. So far there's only one for North America, and I hear there's one for Europe. I'm not sure about the other servers, but it IS location locked. Keep that in mind if you have friends across the pond. Alright, let's get started!

Or.. not. Thankfully it's small. I downloaded a much larger patch before starting this feature. It's good to know that they're fixing things, and adding things, otherwise there wouldn't be patches.

You get five character slots. Presumably per server if they put up a new server. Pick one, and let's keep going. The first thing you get is a choice of civilization for your Homin.

In order they are the mysterious Zorai, the enigmatic Trykers, the elven-like Matis, and the tribal Fyros. After picking one of those, you can pick your gender (male or female, naturally) as well as things such as your hight and build. One thing that I noticed and was very impressed by is the level of facial customization...

You can pick from numerous hairstyles, hair colours, facial tattoos, eye colours, as well as move various features around. Do you want a huge nose? How about a low-set mouth? A square chin? It's all here.

Or ...

Let's go with a Matis character, red eyes, facial markings, black hair with bangs. Next thing to do is pick your starting ability packages.

You can pick three packages, and you can double (or triple) up one to gain more starting actions. You will gain access to the missing category as you level up each category, so don't worry about never being a crafter if you pick just magic and fight.

Anyway, now that we're done with the character, it's time to pick a name.

Yeah, so it's unoriginal. Sue me. There's one more step before we're playing..

You can pick your start location! This is actually a very nice feature. Often times, a starter area gets too full of people, this way there's always enough room for everyone. Now, it's time to play! Or rather, it would be if it was tommorow. Sorry! See you tommorow, and we'll actually play the game!
